“Sinopoli’s group can stand next to the best in the modern dance world.” ~ Daily Gazette

ELLEN SINOPOLI DANCE COMPANY (ESDC) presents the provocative and richly imagined choreography of Artistic Director Ellen Sinopoli. Now in its 18 th season, ESDC shares its work with diverse audiences through concerts, showcases, residencies, workshops and educational outreach, seeking to enrich our community by enhancing the appreciation, understanding and experience of contemporary performing arts. “Exuberant, serendipitous, gutsy and soaring” and “magicians in motion” are just some of the expressions used to describe ESDC dancers who delight audiences of all ages with movement that celebrates rhythm, energy and musicality. Since 1991, Ellen Sinopoli and her dancers have collaborated with over 25 artists of distinct genres and backgrounds, such as architectural designer Frances Bronet, sculptor Jim Lewis, clarinetist Don Byron and composer Hilary Tann. Spill Out!, ESDC’s multi-artist, multi-media full evening work, was named as “one of the year’s most innovative regional performance works” by the Times Union and The Gazette listed it as #1 of the “Top 10 shows of 2006”.

ESDC’s performances include NYC: Avery Fisher Hall/Lincoln Center, Mulberry Street Theater and St. Mark's Church; MA: Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Inside/Out Series at Jacob's Pillow; New York State: The Arts Center of the Capital Region, Greenville Cultural Arts Center, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Lake Placid Center for the Arts, North Pointe Cultural Center, Old Forge Arts Guild, Proctors, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Taconic Hills Performing Arts Center, The Egg. Troy Savings Bank Music Hall; College venues: Fulton Montgomery Community College, Hudson Valley Community College, Russell Sage College, Skidmore College, SUNY Cobleskill, UAlbany, among many other regional performance venues.

Committed to bringing dance to underserved communities and populations through Arts-In-Education (AIE), ESDC offers performances and workshops in and around New York State’s Capitol Region. Residencies, workshops and/or performances bring the excitement of exploring the creative process to children and young adults in both urban and rural schools. Our AIE programs introduce and explore the art form in a pure performing sense and utilize dance to teach curricula and enhance understanding in the connectedness of art and everyday life. By making these early connections with an art form, we create a respect for and understanding of the arts and its performing artists. This carries over into adult years and is passed down to future generations.

ESDC received funding from New York State Council for the Arts (NYSCA) for multi-year general operating support, individual artist projects, and three long-term residencies at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center. It has also received funding from the Bender Family Foundation, Capital Region Living Magazine, Cities of Albany and Troy, Community Foundation for the Capital Region’s Robert C. Reilly Salary Fund, Golub Foundation, Howard and Bush Foundation, Local Initiative Funding from NYS Assemblymen Ron Canestrari and John McEneny, Meet the Composer, New York State Music Fund for the commission of an original composition for “Spill Out!,” Partners in Dance, Poets & Writers, Stewart’s Shops, Stuyvesant Plaza, Inc., and the Troy Savings Bank Charitable Foundation.
